WSOC leads the West Region 7-0 after win on Saturday
TACOMA, Wash. — Tacoma secured a 2-0 victory over South Puget Sound on Saturday afternoon, with both goals scored in the first half.
The first half began with Tacoma taking an early lead, as Laura Corr found the back of the net in the 2nd minute to open the scoring. Tacoma continued to apply pressure with multiple attempts, including a shot from Corr that hit the crossbar.
Midway through the half, Tacoma doubled their advantage when Mersedes Baltazar converted a penalty kick in the 35th minute. Despite several more chances, Tacoma's offensive efforts were met with saves from South Puget Sound's goalkeeper, Kiki Warbus. The half closed with Tacoma holding a 2-0 lead, maintaining control and keeping South Puget Sound scoreless.
The second half began with Tacoma maintaining pressure on South Puget Sound, initiating a series of offensive efforts. Railee Hutton's corner kick at the 50th minute set the tone for Tacoma's persistent attack. Despite multiple shots on goal by Aleigha Woodland, Allison Mavin, and Melanie Rojas-Perez, South Puget Sound's goalkeeper, Warbus, consistently denied scoring opportunities.
Tacoma continued to dominate possession, repeatedly threatening the goal, with Hutton and Josie Harris each testing the opposition's defense. However, all attempts were thwarted as Warbus accumulated several saves. As the half drew to a close, Tacoma's consistent offensive pressure kept South Puget Sound on the defensive, yet the score remained unchanged. Tacoma finished the match with a 2-0 victory, having successfully defended their lead established in the first half.
Corr scored one goal and contributed an assist, finishing with three shots, two of which were on goal. Hutton led Tacoma with nine shots, four of which were on target. Baltazar converted her only shot for a goal, successfully capitalizing on her penalty attempt. In goal, Olivia Meyer recorded one save, keeping a clean sheet across 90 minutes.
Warbus anchored the South Puget Sound defense with 12 saves, facing 14 shots and allowing two goals across the full 90 minutes. Niki Covert contributed offensively with one shot on goal, while Liana Juan added pressure with an additional shot. Despite the defensive challenges, Warbus's performance in goal was a standout for the team.
In their next game, Tacoma travels to Tukwila, WA, to face Highline on October 8. The match is set for a 2:15 p.m. kickoff.
