Women's Soccer wins in first conference game against Highline
TACOMA, Wash. — Tacoma (5-1-1, 1-0-0) secured a 3-1 victory over Highline (1-1-1, 0-1-0) on Saturday, with Tacoma's offense netting two second-half goals to seal the win at home.
Tacoma gained an early advantage in the first half as Railee Hutton found the net in the 9th minute, assisted by Ivy Korbal and Mercedes Baltazar. Highline responded quickly with a goal by Ariana Mercado in the 13th minute, leveling the score. Despite Tacoma's seven shots, including a near miss by Hutton hitting the crossbar, Highline's defensive efforts and three corner kicks maintained the 1-1 tie at halftime. Tacoma's goalkeeper Olivia Meyer recorded four saves, countering Highline's persistent offense.
Tacoma capitalized on its offensive opportunities in the second half, securing a 3-1 advantage over Highline. Aleigha Woodland opened Tacoma's scoring in the 70th minute with an assist from Laura Corr, followed by Hutton's unassisted goal in the 75th minute. Tacoma's defense, anchored by goalkeeper Meyer, thwarted Highline's attempts with several key saves, maintaining their lead throughout the period.
Hutton scored two goals for Tacoma, leading the team with six shots and three shots on goal. Woodland contributed with a crucial goal, marking the game-winner. Meyer made ten saves in goal, facing eleven shots. Korbal added an assist and managed one shot on target.
Mercado stood out for Highline, scoring the team's only goal while successfully placing all three of her shots on target. Caitlyn McKenzie, in goal, made three saves against six shots on frame, though she allowed three goals. Ramera Bradley contributed offensively with two shots on goal from her total of two attempts. Additionally, Catherine Orellana created opportunities with three shots, two of which were on target.
