Katlyn Mataya Named Head Volleyball Coach

Tacoma Community College Athletic Director Jason Prenovost announced today that Katlyn Mataya would be the next head coach for TCC Volleyball. She will be taking over for Samantha Hutchinson who decided to step away from coaching. "Samantha did a great job with TCC Volleyball and will continue in her role as an advisor at the college." Prenovost continued "We are excited to add Katlyn to the TCC family. She is an accomplished athlete, has a great energy and was a big part of Spokane's incredible run the last couple seasons."
Katlyn comes to TCC from Spokane Falls Community College where she's been the assistant for the past two seasons. She helped the Sasquatch to a 40-0 season that ended with a NWAC Championship. While at Spokane, the Sasquatch were 76-11 and Katlyn assisted in coaching two All-Americans, an NWAC MVP, 4 NWAC All-Tournament players, 5 All-Region players and multiple East Region Players of the Week.
She is a graduate of Burlington-Edison High School, where she earned four varsity letters in volleyball, basketball and track. Her senior year she was voted Washington State Volleyball Gatorade Player of the Year, she was a prepvolleyball.com All-American and her nationally ranked high school team took home a State Championship.
For her collegiate career, Katlyn took her talents to the University of Alaska Fairbanks where she competed on the volleyball team and later transferred to Mississippi State with the help of coach Jenni Hull. At Mississippi State, she was consistently in the starting lineup and was All-SEC Fall academic team. Katlyn then moved back to the northwest and graduated from Western Washington University with a degree in communication studies and a minor in sociology. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Athletic Administration.
Katlyn is ready for this move and credits former mentors for her growth as a coach. "I am so excited to be part of the TCC family and very thankful for this opportunity. I've been fortunate to work with two very talented coaches while at Spokane, including Hall of Famer Irene Matlock and current Head Coach Jenni Hull. I feel prepared for this opportunity because of everything I have learned from Coach Hull and also my former High School Coach Tawnya Brewer."
