Strong Second Quarter Not Enough for TCC Against Green River
Tacoma, Wash. — In a competitive matchup, Tacoma fell short to Green River, 67-56. Despite a promising second quarter where Tacoma outpaced their opponent 25-23, it wasn't enough to secure the win.
The game kicked off with Green River grabbing an early lead, spearheaded by Jayla Keowla's clutch 3-pointer. Tacoma struggled to keep the ball, turning it over 12 times in the first quarter. Tamairah Allen broke the ice for Tacoma with a basket that briefly tied the game. However, Green River took advantage of the turnovers, with Kyra Okuyama and Jirah Villanueva both sinking pivotal 3-pointers, pulling ahead. Lanasha Lacy gave Tacoma a boost with a 3-pointer, but Green River finished strong, ending the quarter up 17-8.
In the second quarter, Green River tightened their grip on the game. Jirah Villanueva was instrumental, scoring early and closing the quarter with a layup. Tacoma's Jasmeen Kaur fought hard with a jumper and a 3-pointer, but Green River's steady scoring gave them a 40-33 lead at halftime.
The third quarter saw Green River stretching their lead further, outscoring Tacoma 15-8. Emma Sondergaard opened with a layup and capped it with a late 3-pointer. Lacy kept Tacoma in the hunt, landing two 3-pointers, but Green River's Jayla Keowla was on fire, dominating in the paint and grabbing crucial rebounds. Even after a Tacoma timeout to regroup, Green River maintained their momentum.
In the final quarter, Tacoma made a valiant effort to close the gap. Kaur and Ikunaday Filipe started strong with back-to-back layups, trimming the deficit to 10. Villanueva answered with a timely 3-pointer for Green River. Lacy connected on another 3-pointer late in the game, but Villanueva's free throws kept the pressure on. Filipe closed with two free throws, but Green River sealed the game at 67-56.
